H.E.R.’s Intimate NYC Performance Solidified Her As One To Watch

The mysterious singer gave a soulful performance ahead of her tour with Bryson Tiller.

In the intimate midtown venue D’Angelico–a guitar showroom and performance space–H.E.R. stepped on stage draped in blue lighting. With photos of legendary musicians like Jimi Hendrix adorning the walls, she gave a cue to her band and both the mystery in her identity and the magic of her voice filled the room.

If you haven’t heard of the singer, it’s in part fault. Marketed under the acronymed name that stands for “Having Everything Revealed,” her identity has been kept under wraps by label heads at RCA Records—although many believe the amazing vocal talent is former Nickelodeon star Gabi Wilson.

Whoever she is, she’s a talent.

Having just dropped her second EP aptly titled H.E.R. Vol. 2 at the top of the summer in June, the singer delivered melodic and soul-stirring love songs in the venue just as she did on the project. Starting the night off with “Say It Again”, and shifting through a catalog of other songs including “Losing”, the Floetry sampled “Say Yes” on “Wait For It” and “Focus”, attendees swayed along to the calm vibe the singer presented. Playing both the keyboard and the electric guitar — that’s right, the electric guitar— H.E.R. proved she’s more than just a voice. And she’s not a gimmick either.

Co-signed by none other than Alicia Keys and 2017 ESSENCE Fest performer Jill Scott, there’s a reason the hype around her is there.

Moving through a captivating rendition of Rihanna’s “Yeah I Said It” to her own “Every Kind of Way” and the Drake sampled “Jungle” followed by “You,” the truth in her captivating sound is more than evident.

Her voice is strong and her pen game is even better.

Soon to head out on the road with “Don’t” singer Bryson Tiller, H.E.R. not only has the voice, but the stage presence to keep you captivated song after song.

With 1 billion streams combined on her both projects, including her debut H.E.R. Vol. 1 which dropped in September of 2016, the singer proves that she’s only here to stay—whether you know who she is or not.
